For the Love of all that’s Spooky

Happy Halloween Everyone,

Halloween is probably my favorite holiday of all to decorate for, with so much fun to be had. There is the cute, and childish, to the spooky and frightening, to the spiritual and religious. I am a fan of the cute and childish with a splash of spooky. I love Caspar the Friendly Ghost, and Muppet style monsters. I’m not a fan of the horror side of it all with brains in a bucket or slimy sorts of things. I love the creative costumes that I see people come up with. As a child of the ’80s, we had the seriously ugly plastic face masks, with the plastic garbage bag style costumes. The proverbial costume in a bag if you will. Looking back I shake my head…

You can see some of them here at Buzz Feed. https://www.buzzfeed.com/briangalindo/23-adorable-pictures-of-halloween-kid-costumes-from-the-80s

Yeah, thank God that era is over. I don’t dress up anymore since we never go to Halloween parties etc. We usually stay home to hand out candy and wait for our friend’s grandkids to stop by and show us their cool outfits while they are in the neighborhood.

I used to go all out and decorate the inside of my house with the cute little statues and figurines, and I’d deck out the dining room with table runners, fun placemats, cloth napkins and such. I only did a little on the outside, since we didn’t get mass traffic to justify the effort or expense.

I just kind of ran out of steam over the last few years I have done less and less for the holidays since we don’t entertain like we used to. This year I did pull out the table decorations and a few nicknacks to make things a bit more festive.

This year is flying by us at mock speed. I can’t believe it’s already mid-October.

Travels and Adventures:

I spent the first weekend of the month with family to commemorate my late father’s birthday. This year will be the fifth year since he’s been gone, his fourth birthday missed. Each year stings a little less, but there are constantly times when I still reach for the phone to tell him about the latest book I’ve read, to talk to him about a problem, or to ask his advice. His laughter was infectious and wry humor the best for chasing away the blues.

I drove up to Oregon to spend the weekend with the surrogate mom and the youngest sister, before making a pit stop in Redding on the way home to stop by his gravesite, and visit my aunt and uncle for the afternoon. Sometimes a weekend away is just what the doctor ordered to reduce stress and bring a little laughter back into the world.

I haven’t had much time to work on my third book, the day job has been taking all of my time and energy as my latest contact winds down. But I’ve been thinking about it often and missing the words so I know I’ll be back at it real soon.

Book News:

My third book is almost finished, it’s in the final editing process now. Thank Heaven’s for that. I was beginning to think I’d never get it finished. This year has just been a brut in stealing away my time and energy and focusing it in other not so wonderful directions. The cover has been the most complicated project ever it feels like. Jackie, my poor graphic artist is a wiz at creating beautiful covers. The first two fell into place fairly quickly and turned out amazing. This one is the bain of her existence and we’ve had nothing but problems trying to find the “right” look for this book.

It’s a good thing she’s got the patience of a saint that’s for sure.
